What is MCP? The Model Context Protocol, explained for teachers

Short answer: MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT use outside apps through a fixed list of tools. The app decides what each tool can do; the assistant calls a tool, gets real data back and explains it. Think of it as a universal plug for AI.

Without MCP, an AI assistant only knows what you paste into the chat. With MCP, it can ask an app directly: "list this centre's batches", "save these 20 questions". The app answers with real data, inside rules the app sets.

How one request flows

  • You ask in plain English: "Who needs attention in Quant?"
  • The assistant picks a Mocxam tool, here students_needing_attention, and fills in the section "Quant"
  • Mocxam checks your token: which teacher, which centre, which plan
  • Mocxam computes the answer from your centre's submitted tests and sends back names, numbers and reasons
  • The assistant writes the answer in plain language and you can ask follow-up questions

Why this is safer than pasting data

Pasting a results spreadsheet into a chat hands over every column. With MCP the app returns only what one tool returns, for one institute, and logs the request. The app, not the AI, decides what is possible.

What MCP is not

  • Not a chatbot inside Mocxam: you keep using the Claude or ChatGPT you already have
  • Not open database access: there is no "run any query" tool
  • Not a Mocxam invention: it is an open standard used by many apps, including other education platforms

Words you may see

  • MCP server: the app's side (Mocxam's is at api.mocxam.com/mcp)
  • Connector or app: what Claude and ChatGPT call an MCP server you have added
  • Tool: one action the server offers, such as list_exams or create_questions
  • OAuth: the sign-in step that proves who you are without giving the AI your password

Frequently asked questions

Who created MCP?

Anthropic introduced the Model Context Protocol as an open standard in November 2024. ChatGPT and other assistants support it.

Do I need to code to use MCP?

No. You paste one address into Claude or ChatGPT and sign in.

Is MCP the same as an API?

MCP sits on top of an app's API and describes its tools in a way AI assistants understand, so the assistant can choose and call them by itself.
